General transferable skills: information technology

Competence statement	A student is able to: make use of IT tools and develop that use by integrating it into their work
Basic level	Able to: make use of and become competent in use of basic IT packages (includes basic use of a standard wordprocessing package, library and other information retrieval systems) make use of computer-assisted learning packages to use e-mail for simple communication to locate materials on the Internet from a given address
Advanced level	Able to: undertake certain more sophisticated IT tasks, for example: complex Web searches make use of databases and spreadsheets transmit documents by e-mail and establish mailing lists develop an IT strategy to carry out work identify the relevant package to enable you to procure the work you want to do
Illustrations of activities	At basic level: research projects (information retrieval) wordprocessed essays able to use Iolis communicating with tutors – arranging interviews/tutorials (e-mail) accessing the Internet to get details of the course materials and work to be carried out At advanced level: research projects: developing templates for questionnaires and/or interview schedules research projects: template for thesis SPSS for statistical analysis of research data creating databases to hold information spreadsheets transfer documents, for examples, essays and work to be undertaken for tutorials to their tutor extensive use of the Internet for research and course purposes extensive use and knowledge of information retrieval systems
Illustrations of evidence	work produced by wordprocessor, found from websites communication by e-mail use of IT packages and computer-assisted learning ability to plan work and develop an IT strategy to help them in their aims and objectives ability to determine IT requirements for their study/practice ability to assess what their needs are for a specific task and procure it
